Recruitment based on Experience Vs Qualification

Lately, while doom-scrolling through social media, I've noticed the ongoing debate around recruitment: Should hiring decisions be based on experience or qualifications? Growing up, our parents often reminded us that "your books are your friends" and "knowledge is power." While these are undoubtedly wise and relevant sentiments, how many of us can honestly say that we're in our current roles purely because of our qualifications—or solely because of our experience?

As a Helpdesk Recruiter within my organization, I am often faced with the challenge of whether or not to prioritize experience or qualification because quite honestly very rarely can you get a combination of both and in a bid not to age shame anyone- candidates who do present both qualities are more seasoned in years. A fresh IT graduate has the qualifications and certificates and wants to prove their book smarts but won't have the experience to communicate and assist our clients. It's a double-edged sword, and we're all grateful to the Universe for those initial training periods at new jobs.

Personally, I'm in two minds about hiring experienced candidates. On one hand, you might end up with a know-it-all who struggles to adjust their existing knowledge to fit a new environment. On the other hand, you could find yourself with Ms or Mrs Independent, who adapts instantly, fits in effortlessly, and makes life so much easier.

The qualified candidate however is the best choice when it comes to recruiting for more technical positions that require a candidate with certification and industry knowledge. In the same breath what is taught in University is not always applicable in the work environment- sidenote- “Is anyone actually using the detailed information about the locust we learnt in school - its many legs, head, thorax and abdomen?”. Unfortunately, there is no science or manual behind hiring the perfect candidate. If you need a candidate who can navigate chaos and deliver immediately, then the experienced candidate might be your best bet. If you’re looking for someone who can bring fresh, innovative ideas and isn’t afraid to learn, then a qualified candidate is the best bet.

Disclaimer: I didn't study IT or anything technical, but my passion, drive, and resilience have given me enough experience to convince anyone that I'm formally qualified in the industry.
