Recognition and Rewards in the Workplace

Differences (Recognition = emotional, ongoing. Rewards = tangible, goal-linked)

When was the last time you felt recognised at work?

Recognition and rewards are two distinct yet complementary concepts in the workplace.

By understanding the differences and implementing this, organisations can create a positive work environment that motivates and engages employees.

Key Differences:

Recognition: Focuses on acknowledging and appreciating employees’ value, efforts and achievements. It’s often intangible and more emotionally based in the form of verbal praises or certificates.

Rewards: Incentivised rewards are given to employees for achieving specific goals or performance targets in the form of bonuses or professional development.

A balanced approach that incorporates both recognition and rewards can create a supportive employee appreciation and drives long-term engagement and retention, positively reinforcing company culture.

A few best practices to adopt this culture:

  1. Appreciation should be genuine and heartfelt. In a world of technology, this human touch goes a long way.
  2. Recognise and reward employees in a timely manner.
  3. Be specific when communicating what employees are being recognised and rewarded for.

By implementing recognition and rewards within the organisation, it can create a win-win situation where both employees and employers benefit.  It’s a mutual benefit that fosters positive relationships and shared goals.
